Texas A&M University Launches New Major for Philosophy Students

Students interested in philosophy will have a new major to consider at Texas A&M University in the Fall. School leaders recently announced the addition of a new major in Society, Ethics, and Law (SEAL). This was previously a concentration within the school’s University Studies major.

Head of the Philosophy department at Texas A&M Dr. Kristi Sweet says the major was developed with pre-law student in mind but that students with other career goals might also benefit from the program. This includes those interested in non-profits, fundraising, and government positions.

Dr. Sweet went on to say, “A philosophy major can be advantageous for a student who wants to develop critical thinking, high-quality writing and excellent communication skills, especially in terms of communicating with people who don’t already share their ideas. Philosophy can help you learn how to hear, understand and conceptualize things that you don’t already hold as your own views. The society, ethics and law major is very well-suited for students who want to use those skills in arenas where their goal is to transform society for the better.”

Interested students can learn more about the SEAL major on the university’s website.
