Despite declining college enrollment across the country, the University of California has defied all odds to report record enrollment this fall.
According to university officials, the school will enroll 166,706 students as classes begin this month. The vast majority of these students are first-year students while a small portion includes transfer students.
University President Michael V. Drake, M.D. says, “These admissions numbers demonstrate the University of California’s commitment to expanding opportunity and access, especially for historically underrepresented groups, who comprise the largest-ever share of first-year students. We’re setting more California students on the path to a college degree and future success, and that translates to positive impact on communities throughout the state.”
The incoming class is also the most diverse in UC history. Enrollment for both Latino and African American students saw a significant increase compared to last year.
All eight campuses of the University of California are institutionally accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission. Its main campus, the University of California – Berkeley has been ranked among the top 15 national universities by U.S. News & World Report.
