The Lowe’s Foundation has awarded Maricopa County Community Colleges $1 million to expand its construction education programs. The funding is part of a nationwide investment of $8 million to schools across the United States. In Maricopa County, the recipients will include:
- Mesa Community College
- Rio Salado College
- South Mountain Community College
District Chancellor Steven R. Gonzales said, “Maricopa Community Colleges have a rich history of training skilled workers, many of whom join our local workforce and contribute to the region’s growing economy. Thanks to generous support from the Lowe’s Foundation, we have an opportunity to enhance our existing program offerings and provide our students with the highest caliber education, resources, and facilities to ensure they are job-ready.”
The grant couldn’t come at a better time. Students in Arizona and across the country are considering community college to learn a trade rather than fork over money for rising tuition costs at a four-year university.
The $1 million will be dispersed among the three schools, with Mesa Community College getting the lion’s share. The funds will also include stipends for students to cover tuition and other expenses.
Schools within the Maricopa County Community College District are fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
