Florida International University Application Requirements

Florida International University has a pretty straight forward application process. The application materials that the school asks for are similiar to other colleges and universities.

Undergraduate students who apply to the university need to take the SAT or the ACT. FIU reminds students that they should take their tests no later than first semester senior year. FIU students who do meet this deadline are more likely to meet the deadline for qualifying for scholarships the following term.

Here is what Florida International University asks first-year students to submit:

  • The Florida International University application
  • A $30 application fee
  • Financial aid information via the FAFSA
  • School transcripts or GED: This includes transcripts from any dual enrollment.
  • SAT or ACT
  • Residency information (determines tuition rates)
  • International students must also submit the results of their English proficiency tests.

Transfer students can basically follow the formula above. However, there are some additional points to keep in mind. The school asks students to verify their transfer credits via the school’s transfer equivalency database. Students who have been in the military have the option of transferring their military credits by contacting the Veterans and Military Affairs office of FIU.

Graduate students have different requirements based on the degree they’re seeking and the degree level. However, the school does make this process easier by providing a dropdown list of each requirement for each degree. This is on the admissions requirement page after students click away from the Graduate Applicant page on the school’s website. The dropdown list is in alphabetical order. It’s also possible to search the admissions requirement page using a filter, which allows students to find graduate-level certificate programs, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees.

That being said, there are some general items that graduate students can expect to submit:

  • Test scores for the EXADEP, GRE or GMAT
  • Statement of intent
  • Recommendation letters
  • CV or resume
  • Application to the desired academic department
  • English proficiency test results for international students
  • Audition, portfolio or interview

Finally, graduate students should also be aware that FIU will ask for residency status for tuition purposes.
