Alliant International University does not offer a wide selection of courses of study. Instead, the university focuses on a few areas and strives to do as well as possible within those areas, which are forensics, law, psychology, education, and business. Students may choose to learn at one of the university’s traditional campuses, which are located in Fresno, Irvine, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, and San Francisco. They may also choose to study online exclusively or to pursue hybrid studies that include both online and brick-and-mortar classes.

Featured Programs

Interestingly, Alliant International University focuses on graduate degrees. Indeed, only three bachelor’s degrees are offered: the Bachelor of Science in Psychology, the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and the Bachelor of Science in Project Management. In business administration and psychology, students may select a “fast-track option” that allows them to take what the university calls “bridge classes” during their senior year as part of the beginning requirements for a master’s degree in a related field.

The Master of Science in Forensic Science is representative of the master’s degrees at Alliant International University. Courses include Theory and Application of Forensic Behavioral Science, Criminal Law and The Justice System, and the Residency Master’s Project. Students also study how to prepare themselves were they ever to be called as expert witnesses at a trial.

As with academic doctoral programs everywhere, a dissertation is required at Alliant International University. The Juris Doctor, although considered a doctorate, is not an academic degree and does not require such a dissertation. The Ph.D. in Leadership allows students to “fast-track” their doctorate, which means that they will be able to complete the program in three or four years, two of which will involve course study. The rest would be for the dissertation.

Alliant International University Application Requirements

Incoming freshmen must provide an essay, their official high-school transcripts, and proof of a high-school diploma. Alliant International University accepts 97 percent of these applicants, so it is virtually an open-enrollment school.

Graduate students must prove that they have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a foreign equivalent. Depending on their chosen courses of study, students must submit one or more of the following items: a statement of purpose, an essay, letters of reference, professional or otherwise, all applicable transcripts, and scores on one or more of the three graduate examinations, including the Graduate Record Examinations, the Graduate Management Admission Test, or the Miller Analogies Test.

Alliant International University provides veterans and active-duty service personnel with opportunities above the norm, and interested and qualified students should contact the university’s Veterans’ Services Office.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition at Alliant International University is charged by the credit hour at all levels and channels of instruction. There is no set price, and each department has its own. While all undergraduate programs are $555 per credit hour, the varying charges begin at the master’s degree level. For example, the marriage and family therapy program online is $1,240 per credit hour while the data analytics degree is just $740 per credit hour.

Forensic behavioral science is $735 per credit hour, and the Doctor of Business Administration is $970 per credit hour. Students who wish to learn more should check the website or call the Bursar’s Office. Assorted fees come to anywhere between $500 and $1,500, depending on a student’s field of study. Alliant International University has neither on-campus housing nor meal plans, so students should plan accordingly.

When it comes to financial aid, there are three chief forms of need-based aid: scholarships, loans, and grants. Loans are broken down into two categories: subsidized and unsubsidized. The government picks up the interest tab on subsidized loans as long as the student is enrolled. Students who have unsubsidized loans pay both interest on the principal and interest on the interest from the first day.

While most students qualify for loans, some will also qualify for the other forms of aid. To find out how much aid, and which kinds of aid, for which they qualify, students will begin with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. They include all income and asset information about both themselves and, if they’re under 25 years of age, their parents. The government and the university then determine the aid for which students qualify.

Students who wish to participate in work-study also fill out the FAFSA. Work-study is a kind of grant. The university will have rules in place about how many hours a student can work, what hourly rate or salary the student can earn, and other work-related items. International students who wish to do work-study will have to get a work visa in addition to their student visas. They’re strongly encouraged to have all of that paperwork settled before either applying for admission or financial aid.

In addition to public, need-based aid, students may apply for as much private aid as they wish. Most private financial aid is merit-based or based upon a demographic for which the student qualifies, such as “women entering the study of law” or “men going into the field of psychology.”

Alliant International University provides its small core of students with opportunities tailored to the 21st century and is quite likely to continue to do so well into the future.
