About the University of North Texas

The University of North Texas is a large university in Texas that dates back to the late 19th century. Established in 1890 as the Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute, it provided opportunities for those who wanted to teach. It was one of the first normal schools established in the state. This school would later become the North Texas Normal College after gaining college status. The school changed its name several other times as it expanded beyond teaching. It operated as the North Texas State College and the North Texas State University before becoming the University of North Texas in the late 1980s.

UNT, as many call it now, offers a program for high school students who do well in math and science classes. This program allows them to take one or more college classes while working on a high school diploma. The university now has a main campus in Denton and a second campus in Dallas as well as its own medical school, which has a campus of its own. ARWU routinely ranks UNT as one of the top 100 American colleges, and Washington Monthly ranks it within the top 150 colleges in the United States. U.S. News and World Report ranks several of its programs within the nation’s best, including those in political science and school library media.

University of North Texas Accreditation Details

UNT received its regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Though this is what gives students the opportunity to apply for financial aid and allows UNT to accept transfer credits, it’s just one of the types of accreditation that the university has. It also has accreditation for its programs in psychology, teaching, music, and other majors.

University of North Texas Application Requirements

UNT allows students to create an account and use it to both apply for admissions and to apply for financial aid. Undergrads who submit an ACT or SAT score and graduate within the top 10% of their high school classes receive guaranteed acceptance. The university will also automatically accept those who scored at least 20 or 950 on the ACT or SAT and graduated within the top 15% of their classes. Students will need to score higher on one of those exams if they graduated with a lower rank. Though the application includes an essay, writing one is optional. Students will submit an application and their test scores and transcripts to apply for a spot in the UNT freshman class.

Graduate students can actually sign up to talk to an advisor before applying to the university. The advisor will tell them about the university’s deadlines, which is June 15 for the fall class. Students will pay a $50 application fee, submit the online application and then send in their transcripts. They may need to supply a resume, letters of recommendation or other information as needed by specific departments.
