About University of Nevada
The University of Nevada is just one of the names given to the University of Nevada, Reno. Also called both UNR and Nevada, it is the main university in Reno. Founded in 1874 as the State University of Nevada, its first campus was in Elko. Just 12 years later, the university moved to a new campus in Reno. Though it was once just the University of Nevada, the campus changed its name to UNR after the campus in Las Vegas broke away from the system and became its own university. The UNR campus is now home to many different centers that allow students to study topics and do research projects.
UNR also has five libraries on its campus that include the main library and one designed for engineering students. The main campus has a convenient location near downtown Reno that makes it easy for students to work and do internships in that city. Some of the publications that rank UNR as one of the best American colleges include Forbes, U.S. News and World Report and Washington Monthly. UNR now has an enrollment of more than 21,000 students.
University of Nevada Accreditation Details
The NWCCU granted regional accreditation to UNR originally and every time that it needed to renew its accreditation. This is very important for students because it is what allows them to apply for financial aid and to transfer any of the college credits that they earned. The university’s nursing, music, public education, and English language programs are among the UNR programs that have specialty accreditation.
University of Nevada Application Requirements
UNR puts its undergrad application online on September 15 every year. Students have until November 15 to submit their applications for its priority deadline. Those hoping to get scholarships should submit their applications by February 1, but the deadline for all other applications is April 1. Incoming freshmen must provide transcripts that show they took four English and three math, life science, and social studies classes while in high school. It accepts students who have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher too. UNR requires an official test score and asks that students score a minimum of 22 on the ACT or 1120 on the SAT. Those not accepted into the university have the chance to attend a community college and then transfer to UNR.
Graduate students applying to UNR must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school and a GPA of 2.75 to enroll in a graduate program. Those applying to a doctoral program must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The university requires that these students use the graduate school application, which is separate from the undergrad application. They will also submit their resumes, a statement of purpose and three letters of recommendation. UNR also asks for a standardized test score from an exam taken within the last five years.
Tuition and Financial Aid
To attend UNR, undergrads will pay $224 per credit hour if they are also Nevada residents. Students who are nonresidents and take more than seven credits will pay this same rate plus $7,236 each semester. If they take fewer credits, they’ll pay $246.50 on top of the original per credit hour rate. Nonresidents enrolled in a graduate program pay either $302.25 per credit hour or $7,236 per semester based on how many credits they decide to take. Resident graduate students pay $274.75 per credit hour, while nonresidents will pay this same rate in addition to the $302.25 per credit hour rate. Students are responsible for any of their other costs and expenses, including university fees and room and board.
Financial aid packages are available for any student who qualifies. Students should first fill out the FAFSA and submit it online after making sure that they used the UNR code on that form. The university uses the information they share to decide which aid forms are right for that student and how much each individual will get for the school year. UNR has scholarships that it can offer to students in addition to giving them federal funds such as loans, a job on its Reno campus or grants. These financial aid packages can cover many of the costs of any of its degree programs.
