About Temple University
Temple University is a state university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that was formerly affiliated with the Baptist Church. Established in 1884, it opened as a night school that allowed working adults to take classes. Russell Conwell moved to Philadelphia to work for the Grace Baptist Church and saw the need for a school of this type. He offered classes in the basement of the church and encouraged members of the church to enroll. It became known as Temple College and later the Temple College of Philadelphia. The college would quickly outgrow the initial building and establish its own campus. It would also add a medical school and dental programs. Temple College became a full university in 1907.
Now called Temple and TU, it has a main campus in North Philadelphia, which is less than two miles away from Center City. The Health Sciences and Podiatric Medicine campuses are separate locations that allow students to study medicine. TU also has campuses in three other Pennsylvania cities. Most of these campuses offer nontraditional degree programs for students who cannot take classes during the day. It also operates two campuses overseas in Japan and Rome. More than 40,000 students attend TU each year. A large number of those students are from different ethnic groups.
Temple University Accreditation Details
While most schools have either regional or national accreditation, Temple University has both regional accreditation and program accreditation. Its program accreditation applies to its pharmacy education, nursing, law, dental, occupational therapy, and other programs. Temple has regional accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) also. Students can use this type of accreditation to ensure that the university accepts their transfer credits and that they can get the financial aid that they need every year.
Temple University Application Requirements
Temple University believes that the application process used by other schools is too long and complicated, which is why it streamlines the process for its prospective students. Incoming undergrads need to create an account with the TU portal and use that account to log in and apply for admissions and register for classes later. Students can also apply via the Common Application. There is an early action deadline of November 8, with students receiving a response from Temple by the eighth of January. Students must submit their applications and the FAFSA by March 1 if they also want financial aid. Temple requires that students put down a deposit for both their housing and enrollment by the beginning of May too. The university allows students to report their grades and test scores.
The application requirements for prospective grad students are similar because TU asks for a completed online application from each one of those students. They can also check each individual department and program to see if there are any other requirements. Most of the art programs require that students either audition or that they show some of their past work. The university’s professional programs ask for a resume also. Other requirements that students may need to meet when applying to TU include a resume, samples of their writing work and/or letters of recommendation.
Tuition and Financial Aid
TU offers a calculator that lets students see how much enrollment will cost them based on factors such as how many classes they want to take and whether they are Pennsylvania residents. The cost varies from $8,000 to more than $10,000 a semester. It depends on the program, with the business and management programs charging the highest rates. Nonresidents pay $14,000 to more than $18,000 a semester for full-time enrollment. The university also charges a part-time tuition rate for undergrads that starts at $670 per credit hour for Pennsylvania residents and $1,174 per credit hour for nonresidents.
Graduate students pay rates based on the total number of TU credits they want to take. Those rates start at $762 per credit hour. Some of its graduate programs charge higher rates for nonresidents. All students must also pay any of the expenses they have and for room and board.
To assist students with all of their costs, Temple offers financial aid packages. More than 90% of those who enroll as freshmen receive one of these packages. They can use the funds to pay for anything they need at the university, including their room and board and tuition. Before creating a financial aid package, the university requires that students use the FAFSA to secure government aid. The government offers loans for all types of students and some grants as well as a work-study program. Temple also offers scholarships based on both merit and need, which it will determine from the applications and financial aid forms that students submit. It awards scholarships that range from $2,000 a year to those that cover the total cost of tuition. Students seeking scholarships from Temple University must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and a minimum score of 1100 on the SAT or an equivalent score on the ACT.
