About Monroe College
Monroe College is one of the only colleges in the Bronx area of New York City that offers both graduate and undergraduate degree programs. Established as the Monroe School of Business in 1933, it was the first business school for women in NYC. After becoming a junior college in 1972, it changed its name to the Monroe Business Institute. That led to the college adding associate degree programs and moving to a new campus with more space for its students. It did not become Monroe College until 1990, which is also when it received regional accreditation.
The college now has three campuses in Saint Lucia, New Rochelle and the Bronx. It established two satellite centers in Queens and Manhattan. Most of its campuses offer on-site housing for students for an additional fee, but its room and board packages cost less than students would pay for off-campus housing. The college is now coeducational, which helped its enrollment climb to more than 6,700 undergrads alone.
Monroe College Accreditation Details
With regional accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), Monroe can offer financial aid packages to any student who can show need on the FAFSA. This is also the type of accreditation that lets students bring credits from another college into Monroe. The college has approval from the New York State Board of Regents for its nursing degree programs too.
Monroe College Application Requirements
Undergrads applying to Monroe College will start with the online application, which includes an essay component. The college gives students the option of creating an account. They can then spend as much time as they need on the essay before they submit their applications. Monroe also requires either high school transcripts or a GED score and a $35 application fee. Those who want to apply for scholarships must submit an SAT score too. Students applying to a bachelor’s program will also need to supply two letters of recommendation. Though the college has an interview requirement, it allows those who live outside of the NYC area to complete this interview over the phone.
The interview requirement is a major part of the graduate admissions process too. During the interview, the student has the chance to discuss their career goals and what they hope to get out of the program. This also gives students the opportunity to tour the campus and view their housing options. All graduate students should use the Monroe application to apply and pay their fees online. The other requirements that they need to meet include providing letters of recommendation, their resumes and transcripts.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Though Monroe does not charge a nonresident rate for students outside of New York, it does offer a part-time rate for students who take fewer than 12 credit hours. Those students pay $597 per credit hour, which is the same amount that full-time students pay for any credits they take above the maximum limit of 18 credits. They can take 12 to 18 credits for the full-time rate of $7,164 per semester. Undergrads also pay fees of $275 to $550 each semester and more than $5,000 a semester for room and board. Monroe graduate students pay $842 per credit hour or $7,578 per semester as part-time or full-time students. They also pay the same fees as undergrads do each semester and the same amount for a room and board package.
Monroe College recommends that students apply for financial aid and that they submit the FAFSA soon after completing an application. This form is what allows students to get the unsubsidized loans that go to grad students and the subsidized loans designed for undergrads. They may find supplemental loans and loans for parents also. The FAFSA can help students get grants and see if they qualify for the Federal Work Study program. Students have the option of applying for college scholarships too. All of the financial aid offered by Monroe College is available for students in any of the college’s degree programs.
