30. University of South Alabama
In 2022, the University of South Alabama gained a $6 million grant from the National Science Foundation. They spent four years developing new AI algorithms, microchips, sensors, and devices. The college is leading this project and collaborating with experts at a number of other colleges. These include North Dakota State University and the University of Arkansas. This funding followed previous collaborative AI-focused grants. USA received a 2020 grant that aimed to advance weather forecasting with AI. The college gained $780,000 and worked with the University of Louisiana and three other colleges. 29. Oregon State University
In 2025, OSU will open the $200 million 150,000 square-foot Jen-Hsun and Lori Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex. It will house one of the USA’s most powerful supercomputers. AI education and research in this center will be conducted alongside robotics and materials science. In late 2023, the college also gained $2 million. It will conduct artificial intelligence-based research into longer-lasting and more efficient electrical components. The college is collaborating with Daimler Truck North America to create a zero-emission hydrogen-based truck using artificial intelligence. 28. University of Florida
In 2020, the University of Florida announced that it had launched a $70 million AI partnership with NVIDIA. The company is responsible for the technology that powers eight of the ten fastest supercomputers on Earth. This partnership gives students unprecedented access to artificial intelligence training and tools. In 2023, the college announced that it plans to construct the Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence. It is through the Institute of Food and Agricultural Science and will be in Hillsborough County. It would involve an investment of $20 million to build a 34,000-square-foot facility. In 2023, Duke University Professor Ronald Parr was elected as a fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. AAAI is the premier scientific society for evolving intelligent behavior in machines. This achievement was built on the success of Professor Cynthia Rudin. In 2021, she received a $1 million award for her work in pioneering socially responsible AI. Also, in 2021, Assistant Professor Danyang Zhuo gained an Amazon Research Award. This award provides access to Amazon AI/ML services and tools. The college’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department runs two artificial intelligence-focused centers:

It aims to recruit 70 faculty members with expertise in applying AI to society’s most pressing challenges. In early 2023, the college partnered with Purdue University and the University of Maine. The partnership began on a $10 million Department of Agriculture-funded project. The project aims to use AI to allow landowners to adapt forests to economic and climate volatility. In 2023, the University of Michigan became the first major college to create its own generative AI model, U-M GPT. This announcement came after prior instances of the college using artificial intelligence for medical purposes, such as targeting cancer treatment.
